We Love Banquettes

Besides being such a versatile element in interior design, banquettes can make the most comfortable seating – when built properly! Mainly used in kitchens and dining areas, banquettes can be a savior when space is limited. But to achieve the look and the desired comfort level, one needs to keep in mind a few important details! Here are a few tips from your pro interior decorator.

#1 Easy Access

Whether you purchase an off-the shelf solution or a custom built banquette, you need to ensure there are no armrest (or very low ones!). You may also consider having the banquette extend the length of your table. It just makes it that much easier to slide in  and out of your seat.

#2 Angled Backrest

Have you ever sat on a straight back chair for any period of time? Argh… It certainly doesn’t make a comfortable seating. Keep in mind your banquette backrest should be angled at 100-110 degrees.

#3 Head Space

In order to accomplish their primary purpose – space saving – banquettes are usually placed against a wall. That being said, one should account for a bit of head space. This can be accomplished by adding a padded backrest, throw pillows, etc.

#4 The Right Height

There’s nothing worse than sitting on a chair that’s too high (or too low!).  If building your own banquette, make sure the seat is placed 15 to 17 inches off the floor. If you opt for a store-bought settee with very deep cushions, make sure to sit in it first. You might be surprised to see how low you’ll sink in – you don’t want to feel like a child at the table!!

#5 Angled Seat

Finally, I can’t finish this blog without talking about this often forgotten aspect.  To be truly cozy,  the seat must be slightly angled. This becomes that much more important when the finish is a soft texture like leather or wood.  The following image is pretty much the perfect example of what NOT TO DO!

Versatility

One of the best qualities of a banquette is its versatility. Not only can it fit pretty much anywhere but it also can be used as extra storage. This can be a great asset, especially for condo living.
